If your computer (modem) won't dial, turn
everything off, then switch the power back on, and try again.
Restarting your computer is not necessarily enough. If problem
persists - double-click on Modems in the Control Panel,
and select the Diagnostics tab. Click on your modems port,
then More Info. An error message means your computer software
can't communicate with your modem at all, so check the fundamentals:
if you have an external modem. Check that it is switched
on, and connected to the right port. Internal modems may
need to be reinstalled; check the manual for advice.
Disconnection Difficulties
Sometimes a computer seems to log on. But then disconnects!
If it's your first time connecting to a new ISP, make sure
you're using the specific user name and password (re-enter
them, even if they look right). lf that's not the problem
open the Dial-Up Networking folder in My Computer. Right
-click on your connection icon, then select Properties,
Server Types, TCP/IP Settings. Usually 'Server assigned
'IP and name server addresses should be selected, and 'Use
default gateway (checked)'.
Lengthy Log-ons
If it takes more time to log on than necessary open the
'Dial-Up Networking 'folder in 'My Computer', right-click
on your ISP's icon then, select Properties, then Server
Types, and make sure 'Log in to network ' is not selected.
Losing your connection
Sometimes the computer disconnects its self when it thinks
the Internet connection is idle. Open the Internet Options
icon in the Control Panel, click on the Connection tab,
and choose your ISP connection. Click on Settings, then
Advanced to find the timeout settings. You can also lose
your connection if your telephone line has call-waiting
capability (switched on.) You can also lose your connection
due to your ISP timeout settings usually denoted by the
following error message'The connection was terminated by
the remote site'. This is when your ISP programs their servers
to disconnect a connection, which has been active for a
set period such as two hours.
Difficult closing net connection
Not all computers can close down Internet connections when
you shut them down. To close connection in Windows 95, 98,2000,Milleniunm
,XP and Vista, right -click on the Dial-Up Networking icon
in your system tray, and select Disconnect.
Can't connect with your apple computer
Versions of FreePPP prior to 2.6.2 will find it doesn't
work properly with Virtual Memory turned on, or if memory
related software like RAM Doubler is running. Upgrade FreePPP
to fix things. If your computer keeps crashing, allocate
more RAM to your Browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape
Navigator) To do this, highlight its icon in the hard drive,
select File, then Get Info, and increase the 'Preferred
Size'.
